Urban Institute at UNC Charlotte

9201 University City Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28223

Founded in 1969, the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute is our region’s applied research and community outreach center. We seek solutions to the complex social, economic and environmental challenges facing our communities. We engage expertise across a diverse set of disciplines and life experiences to curate data, and we conduct actionable research and policy analysis that helps us make better decisions to benefit us all. The 14-county Charlotte region is a vast and vibrant area covering two states, with communities that range from rural to urban and an increasingly diverse set of residents. This region faces a wide range of issues, and the Urban Institute is committed to exploring these issues, and possible solutions, through data and storytelling.

As a participant in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) focus of the CLEANcarolinas initiative, the Urban Institute at UNC Charlotte is focused on the systemic barriers that have hindered representation and opportunities for minority and underrepresented communities in STEM-related fields. In recognizing the critical need to create pathways for success, our institute has partnered with Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) to evaluate the impact of their tutoring services on elementary-level students below their grade level in math who cannot afford private tutoring services. We aim to test and quantify the effects of this program at three schools in Charlotte, North Carolina to see if HMT's structured curriculum program holds promise in mitigating some of these disparities and ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have opportunities to thrive in STEM disciplines.
